ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF MONTESSU

You know, events, shows in the heart of Sardinia..

About 2 Km north of Villaperuccio stands the grandiose prehistoric necropolis of Montessu, placed in a geomorphological context, unique environmental and naturalistic. The cemetery area dates back to the recent Neolithic (4300 – 4000 a.c.) of the cultural sphere of St. Michael of Ozieri, with some delays of the sub-Ozieri phase used up to the ancient bronze (2200 – 1800 a.c.). The 35 "domus de janas" have all three types of tombs: the multicellular one, longitudinally developed, with corridor entrance and the oven type with vertical access. Various tombs have graffiti and bas-relief decorations among which spirals stand out, concentric symbols, false port and protomi taurine.

The shrine-tombs are particularly interesting, monumental sepulchres characterized by high entrances approx 2 meters, rock-cut pavilions and megalithic enclosures and alignments, intended to welcome the funeral wake. The investigations carried out from the 70s to today dal prof. E. Atzeni, highlight the classic repertoire of the late Neolithic culture of San Michele di Ozieri: pysids, tripods, streamlined cups and, in particular, a fragmentary terracotta female figurine, headless. The hypogea arranged in groups on the ridges of two large contiguous natural amphitheatres, they help create an atmosphere full of sacredness and beauty that probably struck the Neolithic people, feeling that still remains alive in the modern visitor.
